Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910)

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy was born in 1828 in Russia and died in 1910. He is usually referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy and was a Russian novelist regarded as one of the greatest of all time. In the 1860s, he wrote his first great novel, War and Peace.

In 1873, Tolstoy set to work on the second of his best known novel, “Anna Karenina”. He continued to write fiction throughout the 1880s and 1890s. One of his most successful later works was “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”.

He is best known for “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina”. He first achieved literary acclaim in his 20s . Tolstoy’s fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas such as The Death of Ivan Ilyich, “Family Happiness”, and “Hadji Murad”.

He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays. In the 1870s Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his nonfiction work “A Confession”.
